A collection of this year’s David-nominated short films is now available on MUBI.
Italian cinema never changes. Italian cinema speaks to no one. Italian cinema is dead. But are we sure about that?For the new season of the MUBI Podcast Italian Voices of Today, created in collaboration with the David di Donatello Awards, we want to explore five key moments that marked a clear “before” and “after” in our cinema, moments that prove change is happening.We do this through conversations with the 2025 David nominees for Best Short Film, alongside five figures who have already made their mark on Italian cinema.
In this new episode, Mattia Carzaniga meets Gabriele Mainetti, the director of They Call Me Jeeg (2015), which marked a clear before and after in Italian cinema. Mainetti is also the director of The Forbidden City (2025), which explores anew how genre can be brought into Italian filmmaking. Alongside him is Andrea Gatopoulos, a 2025 David di Donatello nominee for the short film The Eggregores’ Theory (2024)—another story engaging with the potential of genre—and one of the talents selected this year for the Cannes Film Festival’s Résidence program for young filmmakers.

Accanto a lui, Andrea Gatopoulos, candidato ai David 2025 per il cortometraggio The Eggregores’ Theory – un’altra storia che dialoga con il genere e le sue possibilità presenti e future – e anche uno dei nomi quest’anno accolti nella Résidence per giovani autori istituita dal Festival di Cannes.
